Heart Health: More Than Just Cholesterol!

When we think about heart health, the first thing that usually comes to mind is cholesterol. While keeping LDL ("bad" cholesterol) in check is important, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. A truly strong, vibrant heart requires a more holistic approach—one that looks at the big picture rather than just one number on a lab report. Here are three key areas I always consider when it comes to heart health:
1. Stress Levels: Your Heart Feels It Too Stress isn’t just in your head—it directly impacts your heart. Chronic stress can spike cortisol levels, increase blood pressure, and even lead to unhealthy coping habits like stress eating, poor sleep, and lack of exercise. So, how do we combat stress for better heart health? Start with daily habits that activate the body’s relaxation response. This can include deep breathing exercises, short walks in nature, meditation, or even a good laugh with a friend. Lowering stress isn’t just good for your mood— it’s good for your heart too!
2. Metabolic Health & Blood Sugar: The Silent Heart Threat Many people don’t realize that metabolic health plays a huge role in cardiovascular wellness. High blood sugar levels over time can lead to insulin resistance, increasing the risk of inflammation, arterial damage, and even heart disease. Balancing blood sugar doesn’t mean cutting out all carbs—it means choosing the right ones. Prioritize fiber-rich vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins to keep blood sugar stable. Pairing carbohydrates with protein or fat helps slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, reducing spikes and crashes. Small changes in daily meals can make a big difference in protecting your heart!
3. Inflammation: The Hidden Culprit Inflammation is the root of so many chronic conditions, including heart disease. When the body is in a constant state of low-grade inflammation, it can damage blood vessels and contribute to plaque buildup. What fuels inflammation? Processed foods, excessive sugar, lack of movement, and poor sleep are all common culprits. Consider an anti-inflammatory diet full of colourful vegetables, omega-3-rich fish, nuts, and seeds which can help calm the inflammatory fire. Getting enough sleep and engaging in gentle movement like yoga or stretching can also support an anti-inflammatory lifestyle.
Taking a Holistic Approach Looking at heart health from a holistic perspective means addressing the root causes rather than just managing symptoms. It’s about nourishing the body, calming the mind, and creating daily habits that support overall well-being. Stay well, stay heart-healthy, and remember—small changes lead to big results!
